Titan Girls Rowing had a successful outing during a chaotic two days at the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia, where storms, rising water and floating debris upended an otherwise successful outing.
During the first day of time trials, the Girls Freshman 8 placed 10th out of 30 boats with a time of 5:16.70. The original rules were that the top 12 were to advance to the semifinals, but a late rain storm thwarted those plans and led to the semifinals being canceled and the top six boats making it to finals.
The Girls Junior Quad placed 16th out of 20 with a time of 6:25.52 - a strong outing.
The Girls Second 8 placed ninth out of 20 boats, with a time of 5:35:29. Under the original rules, the top 12, including the Titan Rowers, would have advanced to the semifinals, but poor river conditions upended those plans, leading to the top six boats advancing to the finals and the semifinals being canceled.
And the Girls First 8 placed ninth out of 29 boats with a time of 4:55.25. While regatta officials originally canceled the semifinals, they opted later to reinstate them. The Girls First 8 advanced to the semifinals and were the sole boat to compete Saturday.
In the semifinals, the Titan Girls First 8 finished 5th in their heat with a time of 5:00.31, meaning they did not advance to the finals. However, their time was the 6th fastest of all three heats.
The Titan Boys, who were originally slated to compete, were a scratch because of positive COVID-19 tests on the team.
The Titan Girls and Titan Boys hope to compete this weekend at Nationals in Camden, N.J.
Titan Rowing had six boats competing at day one of the Virginia State Rowing Championships May 7 and one took the bronze medal.
Congratulations to the Women’s Novice 8 for their great performance. Congrats also to the Men’s Freshman 8 and the Men’s 3rd Varsity 8 for their fourth place finish and the Men’s Novice 8, Women’s N-4 and Men’s 4th Varsity 8 for strong performances and fantastic seasons.
Titan Rowing was thrilled to christen its new shell, the Lisa Zickar, April 23 at the boathouse.
Lisa Zickar, a longtime volunteer for the Alexandria Crew Boosters, served as co-vice president of the Alexandria Crew Boosters in 2012. In 2013, she took over as co-president — a position she held for two years. As co-president, she defined the Crew Booster mission as being very simple. “Our mission is to fund, feed, and cheer our rowers on,” she said.
In 2014, Lisa became the director of the Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints — an ambitious role that includes dozens of volunteers, countless moving parts, and more patience than is quantifiable. In 2018, she helped manage the first World Rowing Indoor Championships in Alexandria. In the six years she headed the event, the Erg Sprints became known as the second largest indoor rowing competition in the world — and the largest event of its kind for juniors. During that time, it also brought in more than $200,000 for the program.
Lisa has since ceded her role managing the Sprints, but she created a high standard that the Crew Boosters hope to meet when the sprints resume in 2023.
Her children, Allie and Sam, were both Titan rowers, and Sam Zickar who began coaching for the Titan Boys Team in 2022.
Lisa and her husband Lou live in Alexandria and remain strong supporters of the program. Alexandria Crew Boosters is incredibly grateful for the hours she’s spent supporting this wonderful organization, and the enthusiasm and can-do attitude that marked her time here.
Titan Rowing was thrilled to host school board members Michelle Rief and Chris Harris at the boathouse Saturday, April 23. The board members spoke to several ACB volunteers, toured the boathouse and Harris, a former high school athlete, pictured at left, took a turn on the erg with the boys' team. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our school system.
Alexandria Crew Boosters is the umbrella organization that oversees and supports the crew programs for youth in Alexandria, including the T.C. Williams crew program, as well as the Old Dominion Boat Club crew program and the Alexandria Community Rowing program for adults. The Alexandria Crew Boosters raises funds for all racing shells and equipment, including the launch boats that accompany the rowers. ACB also oversees the summer and fall learn-to-row programs, that are open to students from other area schools. We appreciate donations of any amount.

Huge congratulations to Braden Porterfield (center of photo), who broke the school record for 2000m on the erg yesterday.
The previous record was 6:10.0 set in 2014 by Noah Stewart. Porterfield shattered that with a time of 6:08.5, prompting Stewart to congratulate Porterfield, saying: "What a beast! Give him a huge congrats. He definitely deserves this!"
Porterfield, a graduating senior, will row for Northeastern next year. He has also been invited to the selection camp for the U.S. U19 World Championship Team in Chula Vista, Calif.
