Fall Crew

What is AC Fall Crew?

The ACHS Crew “Learn to Row” Program (Fall Crew) is designed for novice rowers and those who have completed summer crew and/or fall crew program(s).  It’s open to 7th graders and above from any school district who would like to learn to row or sharpen their skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

 Are scholarships available?

  • Yes, partial scholarships are available to those with financial need. Please contact Patrick Marquardt for more information.

Is it OK to miss registration or practices?

  • Registration for Fall Crew is only available online. We will not accept in-person registration. We will accept online registrations until our program is full. The programs are meant to be fun and not super competitive. Missing a practice or two is no big deal (just let your coach know!) but we cannot offer refunds for missed sessions nor can we do make-ups between the M/W and T/TH sessions.

Which program is appropriate for a high school rower?

  • Fall Crew is for new rowers as well as those who have participated in ACB Summer or Fall Crew or other similar experience, such as participation in a summer camp program.

Can rowers from other schools participate?

  • Yes!  Rowers can be from any school system and still participate in our program.

Do rowers need a swim test or physical?

  • Rowers should have physicals on file at their schools and parents will attest that their rowers are in appropriate physical health to row.  Intermediate rowers who rowed for ACHS in the spring and Summer Crew participants do not need a new swim test for the fall program.  All other participants, including rowers from other schools who took a swim test for their school program, must take the ACB swim test. We will offer swim tests on Saturday _______ at Chinquapin Recreation Center on King St. next to Alexandria City High School. Rowers requiring the swim test must attend one of these sessions in order to be eligible to participate in the Fall Crew program.
  • The swim test consists of a 100-meter swim (4 lengths of the pool doing any stroke, any speed continuously with no rest) followed by 2 minutes of treading water.

What happens if there is inclement weather?

  • Under most circumstances, practice will be held in mild rain and windy conditions even if we cannot take boats out on the river that day. If predicted conditions are such that outdoor activity is not feasible or could be unsafe, practice may be cancelled for the day. An email will be sent to all primary contacts when a practice is cancelled.

Can my 7th grader participate in spring competitive season?

  • Unfortunately, no. Fall Crew is offered through Alexandria Crew Boosters and therefore not under the guidance of school policy. Spring Crew is sponsored by Alexandria City Public Schools. Virginia school rules permit 8th graders and above to participate in high school sports. Your 7th grader may join us again next summer to hone his/her skills and then continue onto spring sports. For other ideas about activities that will strengthen and support rowing, we suggest swimming, running, ‘ERG-ing’ and core building exercises.

Is there bus transportation for my rower?

  • There will be no school bus transportation for Fall Crew, however DASH bus transportation is free to students with valid ACPS ID.
